Today the world was shocked at the events in Las Vegas, as was I. Politics aside I believe there are points to any mass murder virtually everyone, no matter what side of the isle they choose, should agree with.
Firstly for a vast majority of the day replays of twitter video, taken during the shootings, were played both online as well as on every 24 hour news network. The rat-a-tat-tat of the shooter was heard over and over again and again by the masses of those who turned on the tele, or visited a major website. To add insult to injury the name of the shooter, along with his every detail were reported, corrected, and reported again every half hour at the minimum. Don’t make the damn assailant a fucking hero. Just don’t. Also quit replaying horrific in some instance footage so all the world can become victims as well. For fucks sake, grow a brain.
I look back at my generation, I am 44 years old now, and when we grew up, as well as generations before us, mass casualties were reserved for wars, not times of peace. School shootings, or mass shootings for that matter, were extremely rare and unheard of. I can’t say I blame it on today’s generations though, it’s much deeper than that.
We are a society of war. This war started in Iraq, possibly before (see the drug wars), with implementation of guerrilla tactics, using mass casualties to mold, and sometimes control public opinion. The means of media was invented when CNN decided to make news 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. 24 hour news cycles are today the norm. Politicians have learned the guerrilla tactics of their adversaries, including social media these days (thanks Donald), attempting to control public opinion in their own ways. We are again victims of our own laziness. Failure to rethink our points of view, not having the time in our crazy lives to really search for the answers, sometimes just going with what’s easy, and not challenging ourselves.
What happened to real journalism? Three sources. Aid the public in knowing the details. Ask tough questions. Don’t take the government’s word. Question everything. Don’t make the culprit the story, make the victims the story. It burns my ass to see such stupidity continued, but heck money is everything isn’t it, and if everyone else….
I seriously doubt it is the guns. Sure guns have become faster, more potable, more violent. People who say gun control would work, need look at other societies and the fact it doesn’t curb violence anymore than a knife wielding maniac. There it is.. the word… maniac. I look back at society after society, culture after culture and never has the mental health of society been addressed. Psychology is a recent invention, but still the government doesn’t know what do to with the mental health crisis in our nation(s). Medication isn’t the answer for everyone. Psychology is too expensive for the masses, and of course healthcare is too expensive too. Maybe if we solve the healthcare crisis we can start helping the mental health crisis. Wishful thinking right?
Sadly there will be more shootings, mass killings, bombings and the like. Nothing will change until the people of America get off their fat asses and demand change. Quit aiding the problem, and start becoming part of the cure. I hope my daughter can grow up in a more peaceful society. I can dream can’t I?
